Update For August

I'm going to have to skip this weeks Illustration Friday and possibly next weeks. Have to start the work on the picture for Mark and Mai's wedding that I'm drawing (so I'll have that to post at least).

My damn photo class is full and so is the waitlist. I'll be going to see what other class I can take if only to be able to sign up earlier than other people for next semester.

I'll be starting on the sketchbook this week for the Sketchbook Project.

Rich and I are throwing around some webcomic ideas, with his story and my drawing. I don't know if I'm good enough for that but we'll see. (actually we've had this conversation before haven't we? about being good enough! :P)

And maybe I'll get started on my animals doing weird stuff idea.

It doesn't sound like much, but it's actually a full schedule if you throw in being in a wedding, trying to find homes for three kittens, cleaning up the house (and other wifely duties), starting school, and trying to kill the damn Lich King in WoW!

As for the pic above, it was just something I was doing to try to warm up after a long hiatus of not drawing. But I was a dumbass (dumas?) and left the pic on the coffee table where someone was able to spill salsa on it. Trying to clean it off actually made holes, so now I have no motivation to finish it. I thought I'd just post what was worked on before it went to the art graveyard.

Welcome to San Diego Comic-Con 2010!

Hi!

If you're the one person who liked my art (dire predictions of the future ;P) and decided to stop by here, then thank you SO MUCH. I live my life to have someone look at something I've created and say to themselves "Hey that's interesting. I want to see more." I think that's pretty much the goal of most artists...ok, with a smattering of financial gain and getting published/in a gallery/acquiring a fan base too. But mostly just making people happy/interested/feel something. OK, yes, I'm babbling again. I really should stop blogging past midnight *yawn*.

I think the one thing I'm worried about most is people looking here and seeing not much up. I must confess, this blog is relatively new, thus the lack of content. But there are plans!

1.) Continued work with Illustration Friday. It's really good practice and just fun to look at as well. And I've already met some interesting artists. I'll probably mostly be doing digital work for that.

2.) Catching up and continued participation with Daily Shoot. Yes, photography is only a hobby at this point, but I can feel what I am learning from that, in regards to lighting and composition, bleeding into other areas. And on that note...

3.) I'll be taking a photography class this fall (I hope), so I'll probably be subjecting people to my homework and assignments. ^.^

4.) a small series involving animals doing improbable things. That will most likely involve pen and ink and possibly color pencil and be hand rendered.

5.)sketches due by Jan 15th for the Sketchbook Project.

...and who knows what else?! My mind is always coming up with new ideas.

So if you stopped by here because you picked up my bookmark and you're curious, come back again! I promise there will be something new at least once a week :)

Comic-Con Swag

I normally associate "swag" with more substantial stuff from cons, such as t-shirts, flash drives, posters, etc. But for lack of a better word, here's my swag for the con- 4 bookmark designs. I tried to make designs to reflect my artistic interests.

This one shows my interest in art deco and art nouveau. There are other movements I like, but I only had time for 4 bookmarks :D

Here, my love for mythology, symbolism and cats.

My fascination with zombies is shown here. Oh, I forgot to tell friends the Hub got me Last Night on Earth for my birthday! It's a super fun boardgame, and basically, it puts zombies (1-2 players) against humans (everyone else). Since it's my birthday game, I've claimed zombies in perpetuum. Neener neener.

And I think cephalopods (squid, octopi, and cuttlefish) are some of the coolest animals on earth.

So perhaps, next year, with more time (seriously, I've known about this forever but only decided to do something 4 days ago.), maybe I'll have prints to sell. Assuming there is interest.

Doubts and Determination

It took me a long time to realize that my art will never be good enough. Ever. Not to my standards. Even if I were Michaelangelo (and I am so not saying I am), I think my art still wouldn't be good enough for me.

I always put off my plans; just one more class, one more book, one more year of practice.

Well, turns out I've had it all wrong. I should have been doing more art, throwing it out there, then moving on to the next piece. Because I'll always be learning and changing and growing. And I'll never be happy with what I do and therefor I'll keep striving to do better each time.

And what's the point of comparing myself to someone else because there will always be someone better than me. Why do I even bother when there is no competition? No one will be winning first prize because omg, Bob Happy-Trees is so much better and I'll never be him.

I'll never be anyone but me, and that's what I should be putting out there. Getting it out of me in an endless purge of regurgitated art. This will be that time now and we'll see what happens.

Sorry for the rambling; it's past my bedtime.

Old Friends and First Times

This is my first submission for Illustration Friday. Whew, little past deadline but I made it. Barely. Given another day I'd prolly keep tweaking.

Topic for the week: "Diary"
Title: "Even Monsters Have Secrets"

So this is the first time I've really used my wacom tablet, even though I've had it for a long time. My poor neglected old friend. And this is my first time using OpenCanvas instead of Photoshop. It's a little rough but since a buddy just gave me photoshop for this comp, it may also be the last time! Total time, about 13 hours. Yeah, I draw/paint slow.

Edit: Guh. Only after I'm "done" do I see all the major flaws. So many things left to do...

Falling Behind

So much to do. Well this was supposed to be for Daily Shoot #ds233, but I missed the posting deadline. Here it is anyway.

"Today's theme is the color blue. Blue sky. Blue plate. Blue M&Ms. Make a photo of something blue and post it today."
